Please Note: All EBC brake pads are priced and sold in AXLE SETS. Almost always, this means 4 pads per set. However, for a very limited number of vehicles where 8 or even 12 pads are required per axle, such as Audi RS and Corvette models, rest assured each set will contain the correct quantity of pads to replace ALL pads on that axle.
EBC Brakes Racing RP-1 is a medium torque compound targeted at sprint race and trackday use. Its progressive response characteristic boasts outstanding pedal modulation, making RP-1 well-suited to modern vehicles that are increasingly over-servo-assisted. Cold friction starts at 0.35 mu and gently climbs to 0.45 mu by 100°C after a few medium energy snubs, maintaining this friction level to 750°C.
All RP-1 pads feature stainless-steel backing plates to reduce brake caliper and fluid operating temperatures. While RP-1 boasts good pad life, its standout feature is exceptionally low rotor wear, thanks to advanced transfer film technology. This technology is in stark contrast to many other track compounds, which are frequently heavily loaded with steel fibre making them extremely abrasive. This means RP-1 produces minimal metallic ‘hot rocks’, preventing damage to alloy wheels and making brake dust easy to remove.
RP-1 does not carry ECE R90 approval as it is not targeted for road use. However, in markets such as Australia where R90 is not a legal requirement, RP-1 can still be driven on the street to and from the racetrack, providing the driver compensates for the slightly diminished friction level for the first few braking events from cold. In reality, RP-1 has comparable cold bite to OE pads; it’s just the hot friction is slightly higher, thereby giving the impression of reduced friction from cold. Cold friction is still very usable.
TIP: Customers often compare RP-1 with its sister compound RP-X. RP-1 possesses a 20% lower friction coefficient than RP-X, offering a less aggressive bite for better control, especially when trail braking. Conversely, RP-X, with its higher initial bite, is likely to be preferred by those who enjoy the feel of typical trackday materials. In terms of pad wear, RP-1 excels in low-to-medium duty levels, whereas RP-X exhibits superior wear at high duty levels. Finally, RP-X provides full brake effect from cold whereas RP-1 requires a few stops to reach its nominal friction level. This can make RP-X more suitable for types of motorsport where immediate brake effect is crucial and brakes are initially stone cold. RP-X is more abrasive on rotors, resulting in higher dust and noise levels.
